Beaver State Permaculture

Oregon's Permaculture Networking Site in Corvallis, OR

Take the challenge!!! These are the final take home exam essay questions for the Spring 2010 Permaculture Design and Theory class at OSU (intro non-certificate class):

1) Beaver State Permaculture has recently been given a very large sum of money to distribute as grants to students. You can apply for up to 5 million dollars to create your ideal Permaculture system in any climate on Earth. Please explain where you would choose to go, what the major design strategies of that climate are, and how you would invest that money into regenerative systems that will sustain you and those around you when the money’s gone. Your Permaculture system should earn you an income into the future (you may not save and live off the money, you need to spend it all).

2) You have been selected by Oregon State University to be a student ambassador and have dinner at the White House. You are seated across from Barak and Michelle Obama, and the subject of Permaculture comes up. Barak says: “Well that sounds great for your yard at home, but how can I apply that to a nation?”.

3) Labor Day weekend, 2010: The Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico continues to gush unabated, and a category 5 hurricane is barreling for land. Evacuations have begun, and up to 5 million people are expected to be relocated to the Eastern Oregon desert with little chance of returning to their oil-drenched lands. You’re at a barbecue with your uncle, who’s the Oregon representative of the Federal Emergency Management Agency and in charge of resettlement. What advice would you give him based your understanding of Permaculture design about creating sustainable food, water, shelter, and social systems for the new high desert settlement? Do you have any recommendations for the layout pattern of new roads, homes, and neighborhoods?

4) You were required to attend one of the field trips: Aprovecho and Fern Hill Nursery or Portland City Repair. Discuss how you saw the Permaculture zone model reflected in one or more of the sites we visited.
